Deciding he had used the time he allotted for himself, Blair exited the old hangar only to be greeted by several uniformed police officers busily rounding up the partygoers as they exited the building. Blair shielded his eyes as one of the officers shone a flashlight in his face. “I’d like to see some I.D. please.” Feeling his heart drop into the pit of his stomach, Blair reached into his back pocket and slowly pulled out his wallet. “Is there a problem, officer?” He removed his driver’s license and held it up to the light. The officer studied it for a few moments then grabbed onto Blair’s upper arm and towed him over to a waiting police van. “Ellison, huh? You any relation to Detective Ellison up in Major Crimes?” Indicating that Blair should climb into the van and join the other busted party-ers, the officer handed the license back. Blair gulped and nodded uncertainly. “Yes, officer…he’s my dad. Am I in trouble here?” He knew the question sounded feeble. “Not too much. You’re not underage and you don’t seem to be drunk or disorderly. The worst that will probably happen is a municipal ticket…what’d the sergeant say the charge would be? Oh, yeah…being a patron of a disorderly house with controlled substances.” The officer shook his head and chuckled. “We want to shut the party down before it gets too out of hand. We’re more concerned with any minors in attendance or illegal substance use. But we still have to bring everyone in. Sorry.” As the van doors swung shut and the vehicle pulled away, Blair slumped down on the uncomfortable metal bench and wondered how he was going to save his butt. %%% Joel Taggart shouldered his way through the milling crowd of people that had accumulated in the waiting room outside the holding area of precinct 5. Showing his badge to the sergeant on duty, he stated his business. “I’m here to pick up Blair Ellison. Has he been charged with anything?” Sergeant Walsh ran his finger down the roster of names on the sheet in front of him. “Ellison…Ellison…here we are. No…no charge, just a ticket.” Joel paid the minor fee, signed the receipt, took his copy of the ticket and studied it for a few minutes while the sergeant retrieved the curly headed offender. A dejected looking Blair came through the doors and quietly waited for his belongings to be returned to him. He hung his head sullenly, not yet ready to face Joel. He soon felt a large warm hand rubbing his shoulder. “It’s all right, Blair. Let’s get you home.” Grateful that Joel wasn’t going to lecture him or bring it to everyone’s attention that he was Jim’s son, Blair accepted Joel’s supportive presence and allowed the big detective to steer him out of the station. Not able to bring himself to lie or obfuscate to Joel, Blair confessed his transgressions on the ride to the loft…hoping not to find disappointment in his friend’s face when he finally finished his tale and looked up. “I’ll call Rafe and let him know you’re all right. You owe him an apology, you know. As for the rest of it…I suggest you throw yourself on the mercy of the court, so to speak. I’ll stand by you, for moral support, but you will tell Jim the whole truth about tonight.” Joel’s warm brown eyes conveyed to Blair that this was not up for debate. “Thanks, Joel…for picking me
up, for not reaming me out in front of everyone, for bringing me home.
I…I…yeah, I’ll tell Jim everything.” |
